Antigone à Molenbeek + Tirésias

Antigone à Molenbeek + Tirésias

Antigone wants to bury her brother. Antigone's name is Nouria and her brother died in the Jihad. Guy Cassiers stages two mirror monologues by Stefan Hertmans and Kae Tempest against the backdrop of Shostakovich's last quartet, confronting the legal and the legitimate, life and death.

Antigone wants to bury her brother. Antigone's name is Nouria and her brother died in the Jihad. Tiresias has known the reality of both sexes, which has made them a soothsayer. They are a modern-day teenager who become a woman and then a misunderstood prophet. Guy Cassiers stages two mirror monologues by Stefan Hertmans and Kae Tempest against the backdrop of Shostakovich's last quartet, confronting the legal and the legitimate, life and death.

Antigone and Tiresias are two tragic figures who transcend laws and customs. Stefan Hertmans, the famous Dutch poet, novelist and playwright, presents Polyneices' sister as a young Muslim law student living in Molenbeek, a suburb of Brussels that has become infamous since the Paris attacks. Her father has disappeared, and her brother has died as a suicide bomber for the Jihad. Nouria can differentiate between her affection for her brother and her dislike for the terrorist he has become. But she is the only one, and she is denied permission to bury him. Burial is one of the oldest of all human rituals, and this refusal revolts her. In her despair she invokes human law over political decisions, like the tragic heroine before her. She rejects the social political decisions that go against our humanity - even if it means losing her life.

Punished by a goddess, Tiresias lived as a man and then as a woman. Having become blind, their experiences and sightless awareness have made them into a soothsayer. The young poet Kae Tempest, a rebellious icon of the rap scene, novelist and playwright, portrays them as a teenager who challenges the way society looks at men and women. Their experiences lead them to a knowledge that is unsuspected yet remains unheard and impossible to share.

Through their clairvoyance, Nouria and Tiresias expose the repressed prejudices of society, be they sexual, social or political.

Guy Cassiers has arranged for the two actresses who play Antigone and Tiresias, Ghita Serraj and Valérie Dréville, to be accompanied by the Danel Quartet performing Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 15, the Russian composer's final work. Through a brilliant scenographic and technological installation combined with the music, the Antwerp-based director orchestrates two transgressive upheavals of reality that gradually dissolve personal situations into a song of intuition and emotion.

Director

Guy Cassiers
