Vocation

Émilie Charriot

Vocation

To what call are we responding when we follow a vocation? What voice or path do we follow to become what we believe we are destined to be? With Vocation, Émilie Charriot invites Pierre Mifsud and Nora Kramer to reveal the sometimes-implicit choices that led them to the stage.

The Lausanne-based director developed a passion for theatre at an early age. But where did it come from? Of what secrets was it the name? In order to investigate this calling that is as obvious as it is mysterious, she has over the course of the past two years offered Pierre Mifsud and Nora Kramer the opportunity to explore with her what drives them and determines their desires and commitments.

The two actors explore their lives and their choices, confide in us. They imagine alternative lives, lives that could have taken or could still take different paths. Words come to describe what prevails without discussion; and when words no longer suffice, the body takes over, and dance merges with theatre. Convoking vocation invites us to meditate on what guides us to make the choices we make.

For this project, Émilie Charriot is operating a shift in her theatrical work. The same director who staged Peter Handke, Virginie Despentes or Annie Ernaux, intimately following the traces of the social determinisms that restrict existences, has this time written a show as close as possible to her performers, in collaboration with them. Just as the anecdotes of their lives explain hers and then ours, so this theatre that is born from the self invites us to think about collective issues and what inspires – reasonably or not – our commitments.

Director
