Outrage au public

Émilie Charriot

Outrage au public

by Peter Handke

For Émilie Charriot, theatre holds the possibility of an intense relationship in a way that is hardly possible in everyday life. With this text by Peter Handke, she explores what happens to the presence of the actor once false expectations have been swept aside.

Written in 1966, Outrage au public is the first play by the future Nobel Prize winner for literature. The Austrian playwright was already trying to counter the unreal and conventional images produced by the media and weary habits. He contrasts them with an authenticity of being renewed by looking and listening. For him, language is then the tool for seeing and hearing, if not better, at least a little more clearly, lucidly - he deploys a sober language that describes, scrutinises and questions.

After directing Virginie Despentes' feminist and dissenting words, followed by Annie Ernaux' passionate love affair, Émilie Charriot seizes this text by Peter Handke, which asks what we expect from the theatre. A drama, a conflict, characters, dialogues...? The sole character refuses to comply and sends the question back to the audience. Little by little emerges that which haunts and requires a theatre that goes beyond metaphors: the liberated presence of the actor and the strong relationship that binds him to the audience.

Émilie Charriot has entrusted this uncompromising text to Simon Guélat, a young actor who trained at La Manufacture and was recently brought to the attention of the general public thanks the film 120 battements par minute.

Director
