Farm Fatale

Philippe Quesne

Farm Fatale

In this ecological fable set in an indeterminate future, the scarecrows find themselves out of work following the extinction of birds... but they decide to take things into their own hands: with what remains of a now largely artificial nature, they organise themselves to save what can be saved.

In this ecological fable set in an indeterminate future, the scarecrows find themselves out of work following the extinction of birds... but they decide to take things into their own hands: with what remains of a now largely artificial nature, they archive, investigate, make music and organise themselves to save what can be saved.

A scarecrow has, by nature, all the time in the world. But what happens to it when there is nothing left to expect, when crops, insects and birds have become vague memories? It loiters in the wind, waiting for that which will no longer come. The beings staged by Philippe Quesne find themselves in a pristine, clinical and plastic space. Even the bales of straw have something false and purely decorative about them...

Yet, while noting this collapse, they do not allow themselves to be discouraged, instead looking for solutions. There they go, collecting what remains of nature, listening to the ideas of a bee – also lonely in the absence of flowers –, setting up a pirate radio to broadcast bird songs... They worry about what is disappearing, communicate with others: they have plans. They refuse fatality, no matter how beaten down they are, and in the end, they will be ready to defend different forms of life.

Philippe Quesne's plastic and musical universe becomes bolder in this production created at the Kammerspiele in Munich: he has once again composed a dystopian comedy depicting a humanity extended to non-humans, resisting ecological disaster as best it can. Funny and optimistic – or absurd and anxious, depending on where you stand – this game of grotesque masks invites us to imagine other ways of living together.

Philippe Quesne
