Das Weinen (Das Wähnen)

Christoph Marthaler

Das Weinen (Das Wähnen)

Christoph Marthaler's musical theatre draws its humour and lightness from the observation of the unlikely accidents of existence. This melancholy, choral and musical comedy, which takes place in a strange pharmacy, is inspired by the texts of the Swiss visual artist and poet Dieter Roth.

Christoph Marthaler

Depuis murx den europäer ! murx ihn! murx ihn ! murx ihn ab ! ein patriotischer abend (Bousille l’Euro- péen !

Dieter roth

Artist

A Swiss artist born in Hanover, Dieter Roth (1930-1998) explored sculpture and painting, the artist's book and concrete poetry, printmaking techniques and film. In his profuse work, which has the appearance of an infinite archive, everything - including and above all the most wretched objects - can become material for art. Known for his use of biodegradable foodstuffs, he creates large-scale sculptures and installations out of cheese, chocolate and sugar that give off a strong smell when exposed. His practice deals with the impermanence of the world, accident, mutation and resistance, willingly spinning the metaphor of insularity. In 1992, he was a major figure in the international art world, represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale and, the same year, was the subject of a major retrospective at the MoMA in New York. He also left an abundant written work.
